World environmental day: activities for children, free printable included

What is world Environmental day?

World Environment Day is an annual event celebrated on June 5th to raise global awareness and promote action on environmental issues. It is organized by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and serves as a platform to engage individuals, communities, and governments in taking positive environmental actions.

World Environment Day aims to encourage people to take responsibility for the well-being of the planet and inspire them to make sustainable choices in their daily lives. It is a reminder to protect and preserve our natural resources, reduce pollution, conserve biodiversity, and combat climate change. The day is marked by various activities worldwide, including tree-planting initiatives, community clean-ups, awareness campaigns, educational programs, environmental exhibitions, and policy advocacy.

Environmental day activities for children

Teaching children about the environment is important to instil in them a sense of responsibility and care for the world around them. Here are some hands-on activities for kids to celebrate World Environment Day:

Plant a Garden: Encourage children to plant their own garden, whether it’s a small herb garden in pots or a vegetable patch in the backyard. Teach them about the importance of plants, how they help the environment, and the joy of growing their own food.

Nature Scavenger Hunt: Organize a scavenger hunt outdoors where children can search for specific natural items like nests, leaves, flowers, rocks, or animal tracks. This activity promotes exploration, observation, and appreciation for the natural world.

Recycling Sorting Game: Create a fun game where children sort different items into recycling categories. Provide bins labelled with paper, plastic, glass, and metal, and have them match the items with the appropriate bin. This activity helps children understand the importance of recycling and proper waste disposal.

Arts and Crafts: Encourage creativity and eco-consciousness by engaging children in crafts using recycled materials. The best way to educate children about the environment is through art, colouring, or DIY activities.
