NRI Day 2024: Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Awards

NRI Day (Non-Resident Indian Day) or Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD), is celebrated annually on January 9th in India. Non-resident Indians (NRIs) have Indian roots or heritage outside India. This occasion is dedicated to acknowledging and celebrating the significant contributions and accomplishments of the global Indian diaspora. The day serves as a platform to appreciate the impact of NRIs in diverse fields, including business, science, technology, culture, and other areas, within their residing countries.

The selection of this date is significant as it commemorates Mahatma Gandhi’s return to India from South Africa in 1915, a pivotal moment that laid the foundation for India’s independence movement. NRI Day serves as a means for India to recognise and value the achievements and ties of the global Indian community with their homeland. Numerous events and functions are arranged on this day to celebrate the connection between India and its diaspora.

The Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award (PBSA) is the most prestigious recognition presented by the Indian Government to Indian-origin people residing overseas. This honour is a recognition of NRIs who have made substantial contributions on a global level, championing causes that support India and actively engaging in philanthropy.
